So what happened to the once thriving town of Okobojo?  

In short, 12" of rainfall per year makes them practically a desert and they were too far from the railroad.  Then, the 1929 stock market crash and subsequent bank closings, followed by the depression and a ten year long drought known as the dust bowl, all accompanied by the worst grasshopper infestation anyone had ever seen.
